In
the seventies within the USSR
, limited reserves established the necessity to begin exploration and
development of shelf and adjacent seas oil and gas fields.. At this time, oil
and gas enterprises involved in onshore exploration and production of
hydrocarbons were assigned the task of exploration activity on the shelf of the
White Sea, Caspian Sea and Sea
of Okhotsk.
Far Eastern Marine Exploration Company was established in 1976 as such an
exploration company for the Sakhalin shelf.
Far Eastern Marine Exploration Company utilized drilling units for exploratory
offshore drilling (semi-submersible and jack-up drilling rig), and also
provided the means of a wide range of supply opportunities. , Among them were
anchor handling tug supply vessels for the delivery of provisions, ocean
towing, anchor handling and salvage, dry-cargo ship, passenger vessels and a
semi-submersible heavy lift vessel for transportation of bulky sea
installations. During the first 25 years of activity, Far Eastern Marine
Exploration Company carried out fundamental exploratory drilling along the
shelf of the Sea
of Okhotsk, evaluating
deposits such as: Piltun-Astokhskoe, Lunskoe, Odoptu, Chaivo fields and others.
Additionally, on the Vietnamese shelf at the White Tiger field first oil was
found by the drilling unit " Anatoliy Mirchink". |

After transferring the economy of USSR to the wider market economy, and
subsequent privatization of Far Eastern Marine Exploration Company, the system
of managing the fleet of offshore rigs and vessels required fundamental changes
for the purpose of successful competition within Russian and worldwide markets.
For this reason, JSC "Far East Marine Company" was established and assumed
responsibility of managing the Far Eastern Marine Exploration Company fleet.
JSC "Far East Marine Company" invited onboard a team of managers with abundant
experience in the field of fleet management on the worldwide market. Within
seven years, JSC "Far East Marine Company" was operating using recognized
international technologies of fleet management, which satisfy current
requirements and standards in navigation safety, quality, environmental protection,
and protection of labour. In 2004
in view of the necessity to serve additional markets as
defined by JSC "NK "Rosneft" to continue diversification and development of
marine transportation infrastructure related to hydrocarbon deposits in
north-western Russia , JSC "Far East Marine Company" was renamed JSC
"Rosnefteflot".
